In 1929 the Krupp company started to develop a light, three-axle truck, which was urgently needed by the Reichswehr. For this, there were various requirements that had to be fulfilled by Krupp. The main goal was to standardise the vehicles and to achieve a certain off-road capability.
For the Reichswehr, the vehicle was an enrichment for the vehicle fleet and very popular with the troops. There were also some technical changes, such as the 4-cylinder boxer engine, which was also used in Panzerkampfwagen 1.
