In November 1938 the prototype of the Kübelwagen was presented. It had a light but torsion-resistant shell construction with a folding top. The rear-mounted, air-cooled 4-cylinder engine had a displacement of 985cm³ and a power output of 23.5 hp at 3000 rpm, which brought the car up to 80 km/h.
