Conceived in 1938 from the 2-cm Flak 38 for use on Kriegsmarine ships, the gun was later adopted by the entire Wehrmacht. The Flak Vierling 38 was widely used as a defensive weapon against low-flying aircraft and was often part of flak towers, tank platoons and other fortified air defence positions. In an emergency, the weapon could also be used in ground combat, for which a protective shield was additionally mounted. Almost all ships of the Kriegsmarine (including submarines) were gradually retrofitted with the Vierlinge. The Flak-Vierling 38 was produced in the Ostmark factory in Vienna, in the Auto Union factory in Chemnitz and by Benteler in Bielefeld. The price was 20.000 RM.
