In post-war England in 1945, there was a considerable need for an off-road vehicle with solid technology and the possibility to transport agricultural and other goods with this vehicle. So in 1946, the brothers Maurice and Spencer Wilks set about developing such a vehicle based on the model of the American Willy military jeep. Due to the shortage of steel in England at the time, it was decided to use aluminum sheet from aircraft construction to build the body. These were available in sufficient quantities after the end of the war, as production of military aircraft had been massively cut back. At the Amsterdam Motor Show in April 1948, the two brothers then presented their development as the Land Rover to the public for the first time, and a unique success story began. Between 1948 and 2016, more than 2 million of this Land Rover original type were produced, which was marketed from 1990 under the type designation Land Rover Defender. Schuco dedicates a high-quality miniature of the legendary Land Rover 80 in two strictly limited editions on a scale of 1:12 to this English icon of automotive history.
