Im Oktober 2020 hat VolkerRail drei Loks der Serie 1700 sowie drei Ersatzteilspender von den Niederländischen Staatsbahnen gekauft. Nach umfangreicher Wartung und Lackierung in den Hausfarben wurde im Januar 2021 mit VolkerRail 7178 die erste eigene Elektrolokomotive in Dienst gestellt. Die ehemals bei den NS als 1778 bezeichnete Lok wird vom niederländischen Schieneninfrastruktur-Unternehmen zur Traktion der vielfältigen Arbeitszüge verwendet.
