BBÖ ordered twenty locomotives of the 1029 series for fast passenger trains in 1920/21.
These were machines with a 1´C1´ axle arrangement. Two electric motors drove the coupled axles via a common reduction gear and a jackshaft. The machines were delivered between 1923 and 1925 and were originally designed for 70 km/h two locomotives were delivered with a gearbox for 80 km/h on a trial basis.
By 1930, all locomotives had been converted for 75 km/h. The vehicles were used on all electrified lines at the time, for example Innsbruck-Telfs- Landeck, later to Salzburg and in Vorarlberg. They were the first locomotives on the Salzkammergutbahn, which was electrified in 1923.
When they were taken over by the German Reichsbahn in 1938, the locomotives were classified as E33 in the German numbering system. The Reichsbahn began phasing out the not very reliable locomotives as early as 1942, meaning that 13 locomotives were still in service at the end of the war. Six of these were in Austria and seven in Germany.
The locomotives in Germany were stationed at the Basel Badischer Bahnhof depot and were mainly used on the Wiesentalbahn and Wehratalbahn. In 1947, two machines were
were exchanged for E 71s remaining in Austria and in 1952 all 1029s were finally back in their home country.
