Aviogenex wurde 1968 als Charterfluggesellschaft gegründet, um Sonnenanbeter aus Westeuropa, mit Schwerpunkt Deutschland und Großbritannien, nach Jugoslawien zu bringen. Am 30. April 1969 erfolgte der Erstflug von Belgrad nach Düsseldorf mit einer TU-134. Getauft war die 1971 ausgelieferte YU-AJA auf die Stadt Titograd. Zwischen 1946 und 1992 wurde die Stadt Podgorica, heute Hauptstadt der Republik Montenegro, zu Ehren des jugoslawischen Staatspräsidenten Josip Tito umbenannt.
