1:35 Kit IJN Special Type 4 Ka-Tsu with torpedo insert Tatsumaki
Japanese light armoured amphibious supply vehicle type 4 Ka-Tsu with torbedos.
A special feature of the Ka-Tsu was the hermetically sealed engine and electrical compartments.
The reason for the sealing was the requirement to be able to bring the Ka-Tsu to its destination by submarine transport.
The Ka-Tsu amphibious tug was intended for Operation Tatsumaki (Tornado), a Japanese plan for a surprise attack on a US fast transport unit in the Majuro Atoll lagoon in the Marshall Islands in May 1944. Five IJN submarines were to carry Ka-Tsus on their decks. Each craft carried two 450mm Type 2 torpedoes, and they were to sail over the outer reef and enter the inner lagoon to torpedo US battleships lying there.
There are many new parts in the box, including of course the torpedoes carried on either side of the hull deck, and the associated mounts to hold them in place. The pintle-mounted machine gun is also new, while the hull deck arrangement has been adjusted. This kit is a modified 1/35th scale reissue from Dragon, and modellers now have a great opportunity to build a rare and fascinating Japanese craft of historical interest.
