According to Soviet terminology, the KW was considered a heavy tank. It initially had unprecedented heavy armour, which was further reinforced during the war, and a 76.2 mm gun. The top speed of 20 km/h in terrain was relatively low and the power transmission (clutch/gearbox) was unreliable, so that these tanks more often broke down with defects than were destroyed by enemy action.
