The Sd.Kfz. 222 (2 cm) and the Sd.Kfz. 223 (Fu) were developed and put into service at the same time as the Sd.Kfz. 221.
While the Sd.Kfz. 222 with the heavy armament, corresponding to the light German Pz.Kpfw. II, the Sd.Kfz. 223 with its more extensive radio equipment (initially FuG 10, later FuG 12) was to relay the messages of the Sd.Kfz. 221.
Due to the weapon turret and the radio equipment these vehicles needed a wider hull, which then also provided space for a third crew member.
