The M60A1 was produced from 1963 onwards. The modified turret of the M48 was replaced by a completely redesigned turret, which was longer and narrower and offered better protection due to its shape. The gun was moved forward by five inches (12.7 cm) so that the crew had more space inside.
The combat load of ammunition increased from 57 to 63 rounds. The engine was improved so that this variant consumed considerably less fuel and produced less exhaust smoke. IR night vision devices were available to the commander and gunner, which relied on an active infrared source.
