Ab 1971 stellte die Deutsche Bundesbahn 398 Serienloks der BR 218 in Dienst und setzt sie sowohl vor Reise- als auch vor Güterzügen ein. Sie werden auf den meisten nicht elektrifizierten Strecken eingesetzt und erreichen eine Höchstgeschwindigkeit von 140 km/h bei einer Leistung von 1.840 kW. Aktuell sind noch Lokomotiven bei den Einsatzstellen Ulm, Kempten und Mühldorf am Inn im Dienst.
