The elaborately designed locomotive symbolizes the history of the Cottbus vehicle repair from the steam locomotive refurbishment to the most modern plant for complicated maintenance of the ICEs in a special paintwork. As advertising and cooperation partners, Märklin and PIKO support the 218 497-6 project intensively from the start.
On July 8, 2021, the freshly reconditioned diesel locomotive 218 497 was presented at the Cottbus plant. DB Fahrzeuginstandhaltung GmbH (FZI) is managed as the owner and it is to be used as a rental locomotive in the future. The FZI had the 218 497-6 painted in two parts, symbolizing the history of the Cottbus plant from repairing steam locomotives (black and red) to ICE maintenance (ICE white with red stripes).
In future, DB-FZI will operate the most modern and environmentally friendly rail maintenance facility in Europe in Cottbus. A new ICE hall for maintenance and repair of the ICE-4, a hall for converting diesel vehicles to hybrid technology with electric drive as well as a technology center for hybrid research and modern training workshops will be built at the current location by 2026.
