Model:
The Big Boy locomotive from Kato in N scale is a completely new and unique design that differs from all previous steam locomotives. It uses two coreless motors in two articulated metal mechanisms to drive the 16 driving wheels. Thanks to the articulated design, as on the real locomotive, the two sets of drive wheels can move independently of each other.
The locomotive also has pantographs in both the drive sections and the tender to ensure maximum electrical coverage and reliability.

Prototype:
The 4-8-8-4 Big Boy is an articulated steam locomotive that was manufactured by the American Locomotive Company between 1941 and 1944. The Union Pacific was the only customer for these locomotives and owned and operated a total of 25 of these colossal 600-ton locomotives.
